Hello Fellow Colleagues!
I've been an English teacher for just over 14 years now, having taught everything from juniors to adults. I am currently living in Canada, and work in a LINC program (Language Instruction for Newcomers) which are essentially federally-funded (free!) English classes for refugees and newcomers from all over the world. Our goal is to help non-Canadians integrate and find jobs.
The main reason I am interested in this course is to continue learning how to develop better and more practical materials for my students. In LINC, teachers are responsible for the curriculum (via a "Needs Assessment"), materials, student binders/portfolios, and (continuous) assessments (we use Portfolio-based Language Assessment/PBLA). Everything is task-based and communicative, with grammar, of course, in context. Yes, it's as tough as it may sound, but also greatly rewarding.
This kind of course will no doubt offer us all a chance to learn, network, and discuss many useful and amazing things!
Looking forward to July 1st!
Cheers,
Emel
You are in Saskatoon. I am from Nipawin, Sk. I will be visiting my parents this July. Small World!
ReplyDeleteAre you responsible for Young Learners as well?
What type of industry are you aiding your students to be proficient in?
Wow... that sounds very interesting Your English teaching has an immediate survival purpose for your students!
ReplyDeleteWow! You sound busy. I'm looking forward to learning more about your teaching context and seeing the great materials you create on this course.
ReplyDeleteyour work sounds fascinating.
ReplyDeleteRhett Burton Oh wow! Small world, indeed! I teach adults, and they come from and aim for a variety of professions. I was teaching CLB 7+ until recently, and most of them were either in a similar field to their professions back home, or were looking to transition into something else.
ReplyDeleteI'd love to be able to work with refugees. I think this is probably the most rewarding aspect of the job. I'd also love to be in Canada and meet Justin :)
ReplyDeleteHi Emel! In August I'll start teaching newcomers to Brazil too, but I'll be teaching Portuguese. Hope I'll be able to learn a lot from you.
