I would like to ask a question - Is there a designer who gives the final touch to all the material - decorating the pages, texts, exercises....or the author is the one who does it all, when we speak about writing a student's book for example?

First of all I want to say that I ENJOYED the course. I wish it lasted longer.... THANK YOU so much Katherine!!!

First of all I want to say that I ENJOYED the course. I wish it lasted longer.... THANK YOU so much Katherine!!!
For the week 4 material I designed some games and puzzles on topic 'Fruits' for young learners A1/A2 level.
The last Fruit Alphabet picture I used is from www.etsy.com.
I am so happy I was part of such a wonderful course!!!

Where do I see myself in 12 months from now in terms of a material writing?

Where do I see myself in 12 months from now in terms of a material writing?
It is my very big desire to make a material for preschoolers and my wish came true with this course to learn a lot about it!!! THANK YOU!!!
I have made some ELT materials for my adults learners before, but now I have a frame in my mind about the important aspects when it comes to creating it.
I need to read a lot and I hope that in near future my book will see the light of the day!!!

This is my week 3 material.

Which ONE piece of advice would you give a teacher who wanted to create their own classroom material?

Be sure the material is at the same time INTERESTING and meets the NEEDS of the students.

The following activities are for youmg learners.

The following activities are for youmg learners.
https://myenglishimages.com is the source I used for authentic materials for young learners.

The ELT material is aimed for young learners A2 level. The vocabulary is mainly A1 and some words are A2 level CEFR.

The pre-reading activity will be speaking about jobs and introducing a member of the family.

Before students read the text I almost always ask the students to look at the photo and tell me what they see, what they think about the man on the photo....

For the second task I have chosen an article from a UK newspaper.

For the second task I have chosen an article from a UK newspaper.
The source is: www.dailymail.co.uk
Although the majority of the words is A2 CEFR level, there are some B1 and a few B2 level.
I would have this ELT material with B1 level students, in a class focused on vocabulary.

When using an authentic audio or video it is important to use only ‘native speakers’.

When using an authentic audio or video it is important to use only ‘native speakers’.

Do you agree or disagree? Give reasons.

First of all, I agree with everything said so far on this topic. I do not want to repeat with the others but want to add something I have noticed during my teaching career.
I do not agree that it is important our students to listen to only 'native speakers'.
When students listen to non-natives they immediatelly notice the different accent and pronunciation and they feel motivated and encouraged. Why? Because they recognize themselves in those voices... they don't have to sound perfect... they are encouraged to speak more confidently because there are other people there, who also don't sound that much English, whose accent is also not perfect as theirs.
The non-native talks act so motivating on them and that is very important, too.

In my teaching I use photos. My photographs mainly. ( This is a photo of my daughter. )
☆ I give every student a copy of this photo and first I ask them to think of a heading.
☆ They all come up with different headings and tell me why they gave such heading for the photograph.
☆ The focus on this class is on speaking, so we talk about this picture... ( I sometimes put some papers on the table, each with a question : What does it show? Where was it taken? What can you say about the person on the photo? What emotions does this photo create in you? ..... )
When we finish the discussion I give them old newspapers and some scissors and ask them to find a photo they want to describe. They cut it out, show their classmates and talk about it.

I usually do such activities with A2 and B1 level students.

I am looking forward to comments and ideas ....

There are three short texts that I choose and often use in my classes ( A2 - B1 CEFR )when teaching vocabulary.
Why I choose them? Because they are short and interesting.
The aim/ objectives : to teach new vocabulary / to recycle the old one.
Task: Student/s retell the texts, describe the words "reincarnation" , "founded" , "collide" etc... and give their own examples using these words.
The focus of this class is on speaking. The texts are supported with pictures that can be a great pairwork activity- they can show each other the pictures, telling what the story is about.
These short texts I found on internet one day " 13 Unbelievable Coincidences That Leave Us With Many Questions About The World" and they were so intetesting to me that I immediatelly made copies and use them with my students.

When creating my own teaching material, first I want it to have meaningful and comprehensible input, to be short, not long and boring, eye-catching- which means if it is possible I include ilustrations and pictures, Krashen's i1+1, interesting and to challenge the student/s.
