Which ONE piece of advice would you give a teacher who wanted to create their own classroom material?
I would tell them that before they create their own materials to review some similar materials, and publish their findings in a related newsletter, or magazine, so that they have to decide/find a set of criteria to evaluate them, and then to analyze what the author was trying to do, and whether they achieved it, and what could be improved. Furthermore, the reviewer would also have to decide on whether they would actually use these materials, and to what degree. This process would help the teacher to have a clearer vision of what they would and would not like to do. This publishing process would hopefully enable them to be more rigorous in their own material design too.
That's an excellent and well thought-out piece of advice Adam. I think we have a tendency sometimes to miss the obvious - which is In this context) to evaluate existing materials. The process can be tremendously enlightening. Thank you!
