Here goes, the final assignment.

Here goes, the final assignment.. Assignment # 4. I used the idea of running dictation and modified it to review and internalize 2-word phrasal verbs. Phrasal verbs are very difficult for Pakistani learners, mainly because the feature is a rarely used one in Urdu. Since students have a tendency to 'translate' mentally from Urdu into English in order to gain accuracy, we as teachers, find that 'phrasal verbs' are hard to internalize. For example, instead of using 'switch on, turn on'' they will say "burn the lights' because in corresponds to Urdu phraseology. Taking this into consideration, ELT teachers in Pakistan have to compensate for such errors by iteration. Here is the game I used just recently with my class.

  2. Hi Rehmat,

Thanks for sharing your materials and for the background info. I have news for you … phrasal verbs are difficult all around the world, not just for your students.

    Comments on materials

It’s a delight to read through your materials because they are so beautiful, Rehmat! Always laid out in a nice clear way with plenty of white space and clear headings, boxes and spaces. These materials are no different.

One thing I would mention is that I would expect the studnets’ materials to be slightly different and have none of the teacher instructions. I am assuming this is the case. Instructions need to be addressed at EITHER a teacher OR students. Sometimes this means that you have to make two copies. I suggest doing that here. So copy the materials you have made and remove all the references that the studnets don’t need to see. You can also simplify instructions too.
    E.g.
    1. Work in pairs, A and B.
    2. Your teacher will show you two lists of verbs and prepositions.
    Etc.

You’ve clearly given this a lot of time and thought and I congratulate you on the results.

  3. Thanks Katherine, I appreciate your be feedback. You're right, your suggestions make so much sense. I like the idea of addressing the students and of having 2 sets of materials - one for teachers and one for students.
