Here is my week two assignment: authentic reading.

Here is my week two assignment: authentic reading. The level is mostly A1 (70%), A2 (19%) with four words coming off list and one word at B2 (muscle). For muscle and the other off list words, I isolated them by putting them into an activity. This is written for self-study. I normally don't use authentic materials so this was a difficult assignment for me. I'm looking forward to hearing your feedback. Please don't pull your punches, let me have it. Thanks

  1. Mark I like your worksheet! I think it's a very good exercise on vocabulary and not only the new words. I like the fact that you ask the students to divide the words into two boxes ( words I know/words I don't know) I think it also gives them a chance to try to guess the words they don't know if they use the ones they know and consider the context so as to guess the meaning of the new ones. I like the fact that there is work to do with the new words and they are put in a context which makes it easier for the students to remember them. Finally, I like the last part of your worksheet, from theory to practice, I might actually need to do that for myself!

  2. I like your design. It is easy to find the start of each section of the lesson (numbers, star shapes and colors).

The progression of the task help the learners to construct a better idea of the words, theme and reason for learning using a variety of different activities type. It could even motivate the students to take up exercise at home before or after your English Lesson #gamechanger

I like how you have branding on your webpage. I think this is something teachers should learn so they can build a portfolio of their work.

    Thank you for sharing.

  3. Brilliant topic and brilliant worksheet. It's motivating enough for anyone to start the 6-day program.

  4. This is great! Very real world and engaging. The layout makes it easy to follow along, as well.

  5. Could it get any more authentic than that!? This is meaningful stuff! It's a great topic and a great way to approach it. I like the layout, too - it is clear and easy to follow. The only thing I would consider adding would be numbers (1-4) with the words on the left and letters (a-d) with the words on the right in exercise 2, and a space to fill in the answer (e.g. 1-c). I think this is a more standard way which Ss are familiar with rather than having two 1s, two 2s, etc.one on the left and one on the right. But this is subjective, of course; might work perfectly well for others. I would also try to be more consistent with capitalization in exercise 3.
Oh, and I also like the idea of having Ss identify the words they know and don't know. And the fact that you are giving us Sunday off, without workout, to rest :D

  6. Hi Mark,
Thanks for sharing your materials – nice that I pushed you outside your comfort zone too!

For someone who isn’t used to using authentic content for materials you’ve done an excellent job! I love how you’ve built up these vocabulary activities around the text and it’s about something very real and present so should be motivating.

The materials are well designed and look attractive too. Use them soon so we can see what the students think of them!

Just one small thing: Ex3 2 and 6 have capital letters while the rest don’t. Otherwise … great!

  8. I really like your material, Mark. It is a great way for teaching new vocabulary to students and it has different exercises so that it can fit different students' needs. I think I will be using your material in the future with my class, if allowed. Thank you for sharing it :)

  12. Margarita Kosior Thank you for your helpful feedback. I took your suggestions to heart and made those changes. It is good to have other eyes. I don't know how I missed those two capitalization mistakes (actually, I do it a lot). Your suggestions improved my worksheets, thank you.

  13. Katherine Bilsborough Thank you for your time and effort, much appreciated! As I was walking this morning, I was thinking about your comment and this assignment. The good: I was pushed to make something that I needed to do but wasn't sure how to go about it. Because of this assignment, I feel I might have accomplished a goal of making worksheets for self-study, not necessarily authentic but worksheets for people to do on their own. That is something that is important and has economic value. The bad: it took me longer to make. It's hard finding authentic material for lower levels. Lower level students are my main audience at university and those who watch and use my YouTube videos at home and in their classroom. I am also grateful to the others in this course who have had great suggestions which has improved my work. Have a nice day.

  15. Katherine Bilsborough Yes, I did use this with a few uni classes. It went very well. Especially, when they shared their workout plan with their classmates. It was fun. I also did a live stream session with this activity. More than 500 people tuned in to do these three worksheets. it took over 50 minutes. I'm tired.
