My response to the discussion question: When using an authentic audio or video it is important to use only ‘native speakers'. Do you agree or disagree? Give reasons

I don't believe there is a totally correct yes or no answer to this question. I feel that a lot of students at the beginning level do not benefit from only authentic materials or even adapted authentic materials. Until the student has some basic grasp of English grammar, listening, reading ,and writing skills, I think very structured designed for learning materials should be utilized. Then over time as students’ skills improve, the authentic materials and native speaker generated types of materials should be added in. By the time students reach the advanced level, the majority of materials used should be “authentic” and native speaker generated. These advanced students will be using their English language skills in more authentic real life situations like in an English college classroom or in the workplace. Therefore, they need to know what it sounds and looks like to function correctly in those environments.

  1. I agree with what you write about authentic materials. It is a very talented teacher indeed who can take authentic materials and adapt them to be used for complete beginners.
As for native speaker generated materials for advanced learners, I don't agree that they are the only ones who know "what it sounds and looks like to function correctly in those environments." Why wouldn't any successful communicator in English will do?

  2. Thanks for your thoughts. I think most of us seem to agree that this is a complex matter. For me, it's really great to see everyone thinking about it and sharing their conclusions, agreeing and disagreeing. That's what a discussion is all about.
