My week two material is meant to get learners ready for speaking about themselves based on examples about well-known people. The class have the choice of two texts to suit two genders.
The task is not meant to check or refine grammar, it's to refine speaking by using texts as patterns to compare and contrast.
Making one - shot videos refines speaking
confidence and gets learners ready to speak in front of the camera lence, as well as the public.
My learners do a lot of videotelling on different topics. I have had this practice with my learners for many years. My learners assess their videos on disscussed criteria. They upload their videos on our closed community on FB. Every form have their own page.

  1. Hi Mariia,

Thanks for sharing your materials and for sharing the background information which was really useful. I love the idea that your students do a lot of video telling. I bet they love that.

Some of the materials got a bit unformatted in Google. I think if you save it as a pdf next time, you can avoid that.

Nice intro with the word cloud and getting them to speculate.
Ex. 2 I think the instructions could be clearer. Maybe:

Choose one of the texts, A or B.
Read the text. Then look at the word cloud again. Which words refer to your chosen text?

    (Is this the task?)

Ex. 3 This instructiion could be tightened and clarified too.

    Maybe:

    3. Follow the instructions:
    A) Write a short text (Word number here) comparing and contrasting yourself to the person you read about.
    B) Make a short video explaining how you are similar to and different from the person you read about.
    C) Find more information about the person you read about and bring it to the next lesson.

I think your studnets will enjoy these materials.
My only question (because of current debates on gender equality and representation) would be … some people might comment on the fact that for the female ‘model’ you have chosen a princess and for the male ‘model’ you have chosen a sporting hero. Something to think about maybe.

  2. Katherine Bilsborough Dear Katherine, as a matter of fact, they don't like doing this at the point when they start videotelling in the 5th form. The activity is time consuming and requires a lot of shooting. But then, when they become more confident, they enjoy witnessing their own progress. They archive there videos and reflect on them, not necessarily as their task. We do a lot of reflection as well. Feedback helps grow as well, but it should be constructive.
Thank you a lot for the detailed feedback on my week two assignment. I agree with you completely. I should have taken more time to work on this material development.
. Actually I started real life discussion of the subject PEOPLE with my learners by generating mind map on the topic, using chalk and class board. They came up with a lot of words on the topic PEOPLE. Then we continued to read the texts, nobody was assigned a particular text, and the learners didn't find a lot of informarion connected with their suggested words. This prompted me to ask them to do the Net research as the homework. They liked the task, i call it curiosity development task, they found a lot of additional information and there was a lot of competition at the point of paraphrasing ready - made sentences into smaller chunks for better understanding. Believe the activity, at the point of simplification, develops critical thinking. Though, I should say, the activity is time consuming, but it's rewarding in the long run.
This is how I have been working to introduce the learners to a variety of topics.
I wasn't able to find the way to make a mind map for my week two material as i have once mentioned i don't have computer skilks, sorry to say. It's my first materials design EVER done with the help of GOOGLE docs :) And I was really happy to find the way to do this Katherine Bilsborough I wasn't familiar with DOOGLE drive either. So I am really happy to be the course participant which nakes me learn what I have long wanted to learn. I have a lot of ideas for materials writing and this is an amazing opporrunity to learn the right way to do this.
Thank you a lot dear Katherine Bilsborough
