The following materials were made with my class in mind. I've just started with a lunchtime class at a language school. Students have another 3 hours of class each day and they want the lunchtime sessions to focus on speaking with some language development. There is no set syllabus and we are asked to work around a theme.
The group is Advanced level. Within that there are some strong students who need stretching. There are also members who have just moved up from a B2 level group.
My rationale is that the students need input but I'm trying to limit this to shorter texts which act as a starting point as they are desperate to speak and tired after their other classes. Where possible I'm trying to lead into a communicative activity due to the nature of the class.
Sorry for the late submission

What a variety of interesting activities! I especially like the real-word examples of lying. If you have a culturally mixed ESL class, talking about lying is VERY interesting. I use this subject a lot because students often come up against very different interpretations of what is an acceptable lie, more variation than one might expect. I have seen some pretty heated debates and I think your activities do a great job of digging into these different layers of lying. Make sure you tell them that this article was geared towards a U.S. audience or they might come to the conclusion that lying is mostly an American problem haha. :O
ReplyDeleteAshley Dresser I hadn't thought about that. It's true that those are all very American examples :) It does seem to be a topic that gets people talking and I agree that it's a good one for mixed nationality groups.
ReplyDeleteHi Geraldine,
ReplyDeleteThanks for sharing your materials. What a great subject! Really motivating and especially for the context you describe. I’m sure students will have plenty tos ay about this.
A great choice of text and some intersting vocabulary that I’m sure students will be pleased to learn. I like that you’ve included a video too – more variety and more motivation.
The layout and design are good and very user-friendly with numbered lines etc that help with navigation.
The speaking tasks are spot on and will develop different skills – great. I love that you included ‘Your own idea’ too – always good to add anopportunity for some creative thinking.
Really great materials and I can think of a lot of class types where they’d work well.
Katherine Bilsborough Thanks once again for your feedback Katherine. It gave me confidence when using the materials in class.
