My Most Important Principles of Material Design
1) Simple to use, simple to read (sequencing, SEN, accessible, adaptable)
2) Inspires: interaction, critical thinking, curiosity, autonomy
3) Relevance*: student needs/goals & interests + global context
*When I think about relevance, I try to view it intrinsically and extrinsically and find a balance. This is a constant battle going on in my students' heads. How much of them wants to be here and how much of them is obligated to be here/knows they have to pass an exam, get a job, please their boss, etc.?
Brilliant discussion, guys! I really loved reading all of your posts.
Hi Ashley! According to me, besides being well prepared teacher for the class, it is very important to motivate our students. If they are motivated, we can teach them anything we want. I always try to be entertaining and interesting, so they love the language they learn. 😊
ReplyDeleteHi Ashley, I agree - it's great discussion. It's always fascinating for me to see what principles different materials writers consider to be important. It depends very much on context. But sometimes there are things that we just forget to think about. Relevance is key, isn' it? But very hard to make materials relevant for the whole group (groups) and each individual.
ReplyDeleteRenata Todorovska Yes, I agree Renata. What you're describing her is rapport, I think - very important.
ReplyDeleteI agree, Ashley, that relevance through authentic input is important in language learning!
