Hello everyone,
I would like to thank Ahlem Marrakchi and Riadh (can't tag him here) for delivering their first teacher training session on 'Materials Writing' in our centre, sharing what they learnt from the course with other teachers. Apart from asking participants to think of an idea of an activity based on an image or authentic article, Ahlem shared samples of her nice materials with everyone at the end of the session.
So, do you have any post-course plans, ideas or projects you're working on ?

Hello
Hello,
I'm very late with this introduction. I was away on a trip for two months and couldn't do it before.
My name is Sanja. I come from Croatia. I've been a teacher for 22 years. I run my own language school in Croatia where I teach children from 2,5-18 years old. I run workshops at the conferences and I would like to learn how to create my own materials.

One of my purposes is to share with other educators my experience from being in the classroom for 35 years and seeing all the change that our students bring every new year. It's amazing really, that no class has ever been the same!
Also, I wish to write materials that derive from the compound of English language, Psychology and Coaching, diverse materials for the learners of the new generation.
I would like to create materials that are easy even for the busiest teacher to use, materials that are enjoyable for the students, that can help them develop and grow into independent learners.
I love materials that promote critical thinking and teach social skills to students, materials that can make them responsible world citizens aiming to peace and love for everyone.
I would like to create a blog or participate in one with other like-minded people in this group, and together share ideas, projects, views, knowledge and materials in order to develop ourselves, other teachers and our students.
I believe it's about time we found our tribe and created the change we want to see in this world.

When using an authentic audio or video it is important to use only ‘native speakers'. Do you agree or disagree? Give reasons.
Depending on the level of our students, I would use native speakers with beginners, as they need a basis on which to start building their knowledge and reference of language sounds. Moving to the upper levels they can gradually be exposed to nonnative varieties to get to recognise the language through different accents and come to know the cultural varieties that connect to these differences.

Which Principles of Material Design are most important for you? Why?
I teach mostly children and teenagers and from experience I've seen that in order for material to be effective, it's very important for the students to be able to understand the content, to feel comfortable with it and be able to respond and produce results. They can similarly work with enjoyable material and other times with intriguing material, depending on the demands we have on the production of language. They become more emotionally involved when the content touches their interests, opinions, when they can make connections with their lives or when they can visualise different situations. This mostly works with speaking and writing.

Not really a materials writer (I think not in 12 months), but I will have definitely created a lot of materials.
So, maybe create a website or blog where I share materials and lesson plans. I think I will have created more interest in that area among my colleagues and hopefully encourage them to form a materials writing group where they create and share materials in a more professional and accessible way.

What ONE piece of advice would you give a teacher who wants to create their own classroom materials?
- Always put your target students in mind; consider their learning styles, interests and above all their needs when creating your materials.
- Share your materials with others and ask them to try them and give you some feedback if possible.
- Start small (one task, one skill or language area) and develop your materials till you create more professional materials and lesson plans.
- Don't forget to store your materials. You'll definitely need to use or share them later or even develop and improve them.
ooops, those are more than one, but I believe they just sum up the most important pieces of advice in my own point of view (a reminder for myself, as well) !

I felt that week four assignment is kind of the most challenging for me. I don't know whether that was because I wanted to aim high and create something that is genuine and new or because I was not creative enough to make the job easier for myself!
In our summer school courses, we do graded readers with students of different age groups, so I created a board game to review all language and content of one of the readers "The Prince and the Pauper".
Anyway, I created a board game. I used Publisher to create the table myself (rather than using a ready template) , then filled it with some questions and other instructions. I am still exploring Publisher, so I had to copy the document to Word to save it at the end !

Dear All,
Here is my last assignment. I'm sure you are already enjoying your summer break, but I hope Mocha's nose in the preview convinces you to have a look :)
I struggled to make the layout look as neat as possible, but Google docs doesn't always want to cooperate, so show some understanding if things are not always just in the right place.
I used myrebus.com to create the fun part of this lesson (thanks for the recommendation, Maria Theologidou).
Enjoy the rest of the summer, everyone :)

I would like to have built up a bank of resources that I can use in my lessons, and have them all indexed according to subject/level/grammar/function/topic. I would like to feel that I was in a position to start a website of some description and be able to start sharing resources with teachers working in a similar context to myself.

Attached is my Week 4 assignment. It was quite difficult to think of creating puzzle materials for my context, being 1-2-1 online teaching - everyone else's activities seem really exciting and colourful, but I find with my context it's often more engaging for learners in 1-2-1 online lessons if you can create the content during the lesson - so I will use the interactive whiteboard a lot to draw etc.
Anyway, one game I play quite frequently is Twenty Questions, which is a very popular British travel game, so I have created a worksheet to explain how to use this as a game to practise question forms and workplace vocabulary. I use it with B1 learners, and I only use it once with each learner. The word I think of is always 'stapler'. I find this works really well because it's an object that many people use every day, but that (in my experience) they don't know the English word for. It's really interesting to hear them try to describe it to me, and how to use it, and really extends their vocabulary.

I would say 'keep it simple' - start with one resource, whether that is a picture or text and look at how you can exploit that resource for different levels, different grammar/language points, for classroom or 1-2-1 lessons.

Here is my week 3 assignment, using pictures from the flickr/elt account. I have designed it as a self-study lesson, to take approximately half an hour, with another 20 minutes of homework (task 5). It is designed for B2/C1 level Business English students.
Apologies for submitting this assignment late.
Apologies for submitting this assignment late. The attached lesson plan is for B2/C1 Business English learners. It is designed for 60 minute 1-2-1 Skype class. I removed one paragraph from the original article to make it shorter. When I did the vocab profiling, almost 20% of the words were 'off-list'. Many of these were the more interesting business/marketing words and this vocabulary would be crucial to having a good understanding of, and ability to discuss the topic, hence I believe this article would be most suited to higher level learners than the profile results would suggest. I would use an interactive whiteboard throughout the lesson to illustrate the grammar points/lexis that are the focus of the lesson.

This puzzle was designed today from scratch, since I wanted to make it appropriate for use by any teacher interested.
In Greece the majority of coursebooks are accompanied by a book called ‘Companion’ which contains the new vocabulary in each unit. In levels A1 - C2 under each word there is its explanation in English, an example sentence containing the word, synonyms, antonyms, derivatives and the Greek translation of the word. So, to make this puzzle I usually use vocabulary I have set as homework in the previous lesson and I copy the original sentences from the companion, which helps the students who have studied guess the words easily .
Please feel free to have a look at it. Any comments would be much appreciated.

I really cannot visualise myself as a material designer 12 months from now. I can only ensure that I will always try to do my best in order to make my students happy and help them in discovering their potentials ans their skills. As far as personal creativity and productivity is concerned all I know is that I will be in the process of conducting my dissertation starting in October. This will definitely involve a lot of deep thinking, writing, designing, creating, researching, data collecting, analysing and evaluating. And .. maybe, if things go well I will be conducting my Phd proposal in a year from now...
Hello everyone.
Hello everyone. I tried to design a fun activity for young learners from different backgrounds who get to know each other in class. The purpose of the activity is to enhance cultural identity in classroom and give students the chance to use home language in order to feel comfortable and secure in the learning environment.

Hi Guys!
Hi Guys!
This is my lesson for Assignment 3. I chose a print advertisement about plastic pollution on the beaches to base my lesson on. Students discuss characteristics of print ads and how this specific piece conveys its message. After that, they compare the ad to other two pieces and do a task to expand vocabulary on environmental issues. At the end of the lesson, they create their own environmental ad and share it with their classmates.
I'm not very happy with the images in Activity 4. I got them from Pixabay, a free image bank. A paid image bank such as Shutterstock will definitely have better images to convey the ideas.
In this Assignment I tried to go for short and objective rubrics, so teachers will need to read the Teacher's Notes to carry out the tasks. Also, I have included some points for further discussion in the notes.

I think that the most important of all is to design material in order to cover the needs of your classroom. Personally I find it very important to promote multiculturalism because I work with students from different socio-cultural and linguistic backgrounds. Also I am an advocate of promoting critical thinking in classroom so my advice would definitely be related with creating material that gives the opportunity to students to become active members in class and in community.
Hello everyone.
Hello everyone. This is my contribution inspired by the term translanguaging coined by Ofelia Garcia. Pictures have been taken from the Facebook public group “MULL- Map of Urban Linguistic Landscape, an online, collaborative project open to all, with the aim of mapping the global linguistic landscape. The task has been designed to promote multilingualism and multiculturalism in classroom.

I would like to shere here here in this discussion a video I encountered in an attempt to expose my students to different accents. I think that what is more important when teaching any language is give students the opportunity to dive into sounds. It is a way to enhance the cultural elemants connected with a language and provide them with the chance to create language identity.

Hello everyone!
Hello everyone! I'm Elena from Greece, I've been an English Teacher and a Language school owner for 35 years and I'm so excited to be a member of this group of amazing people!
Since the beginning of my career I've been searching for innovative teaching methods and I was very lucky to have been trained by exceptional teacher trainers. Continuous studying, training and self evaluation have resulted to my having great awareness as a teacher. Additionally, I 've attended courses on Psychology ( Children Development ) and last year I completed my university studies on Coaching. I equally love Teaching, Psychology and Coaching and I believe that a teacher needs to be most of all a Coach in class and help the children discover the best way for them to learn.
I mostly work with young children and teenagers (aged 5 - 16) and since these are the years that they develop as personalities I love creating teaching material that gives them the opportunity to express their feelings, their fears or their doubts, material that motivates them and also gives them cultural and social skills and knowledge.
I'd love to be connected with those of you in the group who can help each other develop as teachers, writers and educators and create beautiful things together!
Please feel free to contact me at: Email: metaxa.lena@gmail.com

Who Am I?
Who Am I? Where Am I? and What Am I? are well-known games with a couple of variations. I've revised previous materials I made to save reinventing the wheel, and have further simplified the language so that (except for names, numbers and fillers, e.g. Ah, Hmm, Oh), 94% is A1 and rest is A2 vocabulary (according to Word Kitchen). The materials are designed for students to use in a self-access (language learning) centre and play out of class.
In-Class Use
After students have had a tour of the self-access centre and start to get settled into the 1st semester, I introduce a selection of games like this in class (which is part of an oral communication course with a focus on fluency development).
Students choose which game they want to play and I am there to help if they wish to ask any questions but are generally able to figure it out amongst themselves. You can find more games here:
http://www.konan-wu.ac.jp/~espace/games.html
Out-of-class Use (Self-Access Centre)
Between classes, they have to complete a self-access centre 'challenge'. For the week in question, they must choose a different game and then answer a short online Reflection & Evaluation questionnaire. (Feedback on the games has generally been very positive - see comments below.)
They usually play during lunchtime or between classes in a free period or at the end of the day. If they need help or want to play with someone, there is always a Learning Advisor in the centre and sometimes a Student Volunteer Staff or International Students speaking English. However, as materials are photocopiable, they can also take a copy and basically play anytime, anywhere.

My piece of advice has to do with sharing and getting feedback. Whenever possible, share the materials you have designed with fellow teachers who'd be able to use them in their classes AND get feedback on the content. Sometimes we oversee important things when designing materials and having other people use and comment on our work will definitely help us become better writers

Here's my last assignment. It's for a flipped-classroom where students read the information on the Five-Paragraph essay on the following websites:
http://grammar.ccc.commnet.edu/grammar/five_par.htm

I've really learned a lot about creating content from this course.
I've really learned a lot about creating content from this course. It was a great investment, and I really wanted to thank everyone involved in putting it together.
In 12 months, I see myself doing a lot better at creating original content that would be impressive to an employer. I really liked learning about Creative Commons because it's a lot simpler way to share media across the internet, and it opened up a new world of content that would help me and my students.. I also think this is the most amount of resources I've ever collected in one class (even though it was only a month long!) I wanted to thank everyone - teachers and people participating alike - for sharing all of the online resources they use. It was extremely helpful, and this will make my job a lot easier for years to come.

For people starting out as creating content as a TESOL instructor, I guess would advise them to do 3 things:
1. Try to learn about your students' interests and try to incorporate them into the content you create. Most people normally don't trust people who aren't trying to relate to them.
2. With #1 in mind, you should incorporate your own interests into your classes. Even if it's a technical term or something you wrote your thesis on, I find students respect you when you enjoy what you teach.
3. I feel you need the mindset of a writer in order to be a good content creator. You should find inspiration in your life and constantly be reflecting on your materials and how you can make them more effective for your students. Even if it's just a funny story that you can help them better understand a concept, that's what language is all about: helping: shared experiences and understanding one another.

What a good question! It makes us think and plan our future!
First of all, I want to say THANK YOU to Katherine, Barbara, Steven, Gareth, my classmates and everybody that participated here!!! It was a real pleasure to be part of this group. I´ve learned a lot from all of you and I feel more confident in my material.
In a year from now, I´d love to be ready to publish some material for YL, using the method we use in our school exposing students to the language and taking the affective filter into account. I´d love to publish, give lectures and visit different places in the world, as someone else said. It´s a big dream... but if we don´t dream, we can´t make it happen!! Have a wonderful time! Let´s keep in touch! Laura Perrotta from Argentina!

Here goes, the final assignment.
Here goes, the final assignment.. Assignment # 4. I used the idea of running dictation and modified it to review and internalize 2-word phrasal verbs. Phrasal verbs are very difficult for Pakistani learners, mainly because the feature is a rarely used one in Urdu. Since students have a tendency to 'translate' mentally from Urdu into English in order to gain accuracy, we as teachers, find that 'phrasal verbs' are hard to internalize. For example, instead of using 'switch on, turn on'' they will say "burn the lights' because in corresponds to Urdu phraseology. Taking this into consideration, ELT teachers in Pakistan have to compensate for such errors by iteration. Here is the game I used just recently with my class.

WEEK 2 Assignment
WEEK 2 Assignment
In my long career as a teacher I’ve always enjoyed the fascinating faces of the youngest of students when they realise that they can identify words they know, in texts that seem far beyond their understanding.
The following technique occured to me when I noticed that some very beginner students used to open books they found in the classroom, such as higher level students’ books, readers and even newspapers and magazines and try to spot words they already knew.
What an inspiration for me! I certainly adopted it in my teaching and we’ve always enjoyed it since it’s a boost of motivation for students to study more and a magic time for the teacher to observe the children’s mind making marvellous correllations in order to find meaning in L2.
I’d like to mention that the lower the level of the students, the better. And if you really want to enjoy the procedure, try it with very young children who feel free to express their enthusiasm!
Note: I wish I knew about the profiler earlier! It would have saved me hours of work! Now the teacher knows the vocabulary they can work with and can adapt the exercises and activities according to the level of their particular students.
Please feel free to comment. I'd most appreciate it.

For the final week's assignment, I created a vocabulary review assignment for an intermediate/high intermediate level English for Science class. The first part is a crossword puzzle that students can work on together to review definitions. The second part of the assignment is based on an activity a colleague showed me for vocabulary review. It involves having students creating a quiz (in this case, fill-in-the blank sentences) that another pair would answer. Students enjoy this because it forces them to think about how to use words correctly (both in creating and answering the questions). I walk around and help students with the creating of the quizzes. After we switch the papers and the other pair would answer, we project the answers on an overscreen projector, and we grade the students' answers as a class to see why and how the words are correct. https://docs.google.com/document/d/1mJEHtamtgwwv4XSVwM5QcLdeyoNXNLFvEz86MyVDO_4/edit?usp=sharing

Hello everybody,
I hope it isn't too late for me to post my assignments, since it's been a very difficult month for me due to family matters.
I'm so sorry I've missed connecting with all of you, I'll try to complete all 4 assignments till this Saturday. Then I'll write my introduction to the community and see the beautiful work all of you have posted in this community and the comments.
So, here's my assignment for Week 1:
In my teaching I often include techniques from Psychology and Life Coaching and I create material for my students with the aim to give them the chance to think beyond their usual way of thinking and their limiting beliefs or challenge them to a different mindset.
I’ve also found these lessons very useful for times when a class seem tired with the routine of the syllabus, or they come to school over excited for some reason, or bored – it happens, especially with teenagers.
I would most appreciate any comments. Please feel free to comment.

A bit late, and I've been flexible with my definition of 'puzzle' (in this case, two/three situations at the end of the materials in which students have to think critically), but here is my work for the Week 4 assignment. I’ve tried to incorporate ideas from the previous weeks’ materials, both in terms of content and feedback, focusing on the skill of critical thinking for students preparing to do a business or management course at university.
As ever, comments, suggestions welcome.

Where would you like to see yourself 12 months from now, in terms of being a materials writer?
12 months from now, I hope that I have kept working on improving my materials writer skills, including getting more feedback from others. What I found most valuable from this class was that I received feedback on the activities that were good and the activities that could be improved on, which is something I haven't received from others when I created materials for different classes. Having an extra pair of eyes to see what works and what needs tweaking is very beneficial, and I hope to take the feedback that I received to continue and work on certain areas more.

Honestly, I took a really long time looking for an online game that can be used in my context. Since we are just few days away from 5th of August, I give up looking and decide to share one of the language games I usually make my students create. It's a card game called Kaboom!
This card game can be played after students have done reading a novel or a literature. Honesty, this is the most interactive and fun way to check student's comprehension and to make sure whether a student reads or not.
note: I'm sorry for the poor card graphic.

Twelve months from now I imagine myself doing voluntary work for some publishing organisations as well as developing my own materials for classroom use. I have noticed that, usually, coursebooks are outdated, especially when it comes to the topics discussed. The grammar points also are not always adequately covered. Take for example the case of some or any, according to some coursebooks some is used in positive sentences and any in negatives and questions. This is not the case, however, for request where we can use some.
I think that the best idea for me is to work with some teachers in the teaching centres to develop some materials for different levels and age groups and store these materials in a shared folder in order for all teachers to benefit from them.
I deem it also important for me to do voluntary work for some publishing companies in order to immerse myself with different learners and learning needs and also learn from more experienced materials writers

If a teacher wanted to create their own classroom materials I would suggest making the material clear and scaffolded for the students. This means there is clear numbering of the activities, enough spacing between the tasks as well as clear instructions. Without these components materials won`t be engaging for the learners
There are two fonts that I use in class.
There are two fonts that I use in class. These are: Arial and Comic SANS. These two fonts make the reading experience comfortable for both students and teachers. They are also recommended by the British Dyslexia Association
I think that when using audio or video it is important to include both native and non native speakers.
I think that when using audio or video it is important to include both native and non native speakers. This is very important to familiarise students with different accents since non native speakers outnumber natives speakers.
Based on my own experience teaching exam classes, many EAP and exam coursebooks are starting to include many non native speakers in their recordings and DVDs. The aim is to prepare students for university where they are going to encounter non native teachers and students and where the only medium of communication is English

There are many aspects we should consider when developing new materials.
There are many aspects we should consider when developing new materials. I`m going to divide these aspects into two categories: Form and content.
Form
When it comes to form material developers need to make sure that the activities and instructions are readable . This can be done by using the adequate spacing and font size. The Material should also be inclusive especially for students with dyslexia. The goes through including a coloured background to make it comfortable for the reader.
Content
The content should provide activities or tasks that aim at maximising interaction between the students. It should also promote learner autonomy by helping them notice the language for themselves. Last but not least, material designers should include rubrics or short activities at the end of a lesson to help students reflect on their progress

Anyway, it was great to meet you all. Have a great summer!

I hope to become a more efficient materials writer with realistic goals.
I hope to become a more efficient materials writer with realistic goals. I find myself dragging my feet with materials because I feel that they're not there yet, not overly creative or novel or some other unrealistic expectation. I'd like to become more comfortable with the idea of materials not being perfect and use the classroom as an opportunity to refine and tie up loose ends.
I wish I'd been less busy this past month ... I haven't been able to spend as much time as I would have liked on the course. It was fascinating to see how people approach materials design differently and its impact on the final product. This was my first ITDI course and I hope it will be the first of many more.

Hi, everyone!
Hi, everyone!
Some years ago, one of my colleagues shared this idea and, since then, I've been using this game a lot mostly with teenage or adult students of higher levels when teaching idioms or phrases. I've created several lists with idioms or phrases I can use in this game. This is just and indicative one so you can alter it by changing the idioms or phrases according to your class' needs. I hope you enjoy it and look forward to your feedback!

Over the past 15+ years, I've developed a fair amount of materials and lesson plans although of hugely varying quality.
Whilst I have a tendency to make new materials for each new course, and changing jobs has typically meant this has been a necessity, I'd really like to go through the stuff I have and turn a selection into something publishable.
Finding a focus will help to be selective and make the goal more concrete, then breaking it down into manageable steps will be the way to go.
This was a great question to ask us all at the end of the course, and I've been inspired and energised by reading everyone's answers plus the comments below them.
Wonderful to see so many wheels set in motion!! Thanks again for everything!!

One whole year..., I would like to imagine myself having developed a framework for professional Business English training materials which could be tailored for different contexts, and to have piloted and then refined my materials. Furthermore, I hope that this course will inspire all the materials that I will design in the future, for various different content courses. Especially, applying the knowledge of professional imagery, design, clarity of instructions, and copyright awareness that I have learned here, from this community. Thank-you.

This is my puzzle for week 4's assignment - a way for teaching som difficult vocabulary in a text we are going to read in class. I've spotted the difficult words through vocabkitchen.com and my knowledge of what grade 9 students in DK normally find difficult. It's based on translating those difficult words to danish.

Here's my third assignment. The materials are designed around three public domain images from the late 19th/early 20th century (my favourite is no. 1!). The language focus is on 'future in the past' structures - something I've never actually taught before.
Here's how I've organised it:
1. The images
2. The activities
3. Teacher notes
4. An overview with objectives etc.

The materials are for teachers in a teacher-training context and I reckon the text is authentic within their context.

After having writen a few books under very strict rules, parameters, conditions, etc. I'd like to publish a book that no publishing company would take on! All the things that are out of the question, politics, religion, language that no coursebook would ever include, etc. I imagine it would be self-published, sales 2 (my best friend and my mother!). Still, that's what I've been thinking for the last two years! :)

I prepared a lesson based on a text about Vincent van Gogh which I found in a book that I love - "The Paintings that Revoultionized Art" - and on his paintings. I've been meaning to use this book to develop ELT materials since I bought, over a year ago.
At first, I wanted to keep the worksheet simple, but I ended up creating something longer than I had planned.
One important thing to me was to include a note about how teachers should be careful when dealing with sensitive mental health issues in class.
All in all, I'm happy with the final result. Van Gogh is one of my favorite artists and I have a print of "The Starry Night" in my dining room.

Honestly, I don't know :) Want I do know is that I've always been interested in creating supplementary materials and bringing coursebooks to life. I also like sharing it with others and getting feedback.
Maybe, I'll be working on a supplementary materials handbook or designing a conversation course using different materials videos, audios, authentic materials, .....etc.

Well... I would love to learn more about ELT material writing and 12 months from now I hope I will be able to write better worksheets for my students, worksheets, and activities that can be stimulating and engaging. Sometimes I have so many ideas but then I realize I do not know how to properly transform them into effective worksheets and I have to admit that what comes out, in the end, is not really corresponding to what was my intention. So I really need to improve my worksheet planning and follow the teaching unit outline instead of just going randomly. In 12 months from now, I can see myself with a deeper knowledge on how things should be done in order to maximize my students' learning process.

I think I would recommend the teacher to get to know the class and the level of the students before starting creating materials. Start out by using something known and then see what is lacking in the printed/online material that is already there. Creating materials is so funny but takes a lot of time, so it really has to be worth it. - Then I would probably teach my colleague to use a vocabprofiler as it is one of the most helpful tools at all for analysing an authentic text

A year from now or maybe longer, I feel I would like to self publish my own book, maybe create my own website for sharing content in the form of digital media. This course has helped me get the basics of Material writing and I believe there is a lot in store that I need to explore and look forward to. I look up to Scott Thornbury and Tim Thompson for inspiration. I believe one day maybe not in a year but somewhere down the line I would like to create my name in ELT writing and teaching just like them.

I would see myself sharing materials with colleagues and fellow teachers more often. I would like to get as much feedback as possible on how the materials were received by students and teachers.
I would also like to start creating materials for primary learners, too. I've been focusing on teens and adults. I want to experiment more with material writing for younger students.

I do not esteem that I have been creating materials long enough to give advice. However, one thing that has worked for me is getting inspiration from students themselves. I have made it a habit to take advantage of the first lesson to make students write lists of what they’re interested in, what their hobbies, their favourite songs, movies are etc. I keep those lists at hand for when I’m looking for inspiration. I also try to make the best out of the first two minutes of class to have more laid-back conversations about what they’re into at the moment. “What TV show are you watching? Who’s your favourite artist at the moment? What do you like about Rap music?” My teens won’t stop talking when I ask them these kinds of questions (which is always a plus, in my opinion, since they’re answering in English). So my advice is: get to know your students and what they like.

Hello
Hello,
This is my 4th assignment. It is a twist on games like Jeopardy/Typhoon/Kaboom that my students seem to enjoy a lot, no matter what level or age group they are. I have changed some elements and recreated the template :-)
Ps: I use Active Inspire in the classroom which allows me to move the black rectangles for the students to see what's behind them.

Sorry about being late - I've been away for two weeks, and now will try to catch up before next Sunday.
Here's my photo task -inspired by my recent holidays (I went to Annecy in France and also travelled round the Swiss Lac Leman, saw the beginning of the Tour de France, did some geocaching and went to Chamonix near Mont Blanc - in case you wonder)

PS: If anyone needs me in the future, I can help with some tips as a voluntary editor.

Hello, everyone!
Hello, everyone! This is my Week 4 assignment. I use games or game-based materials a lot in my teaching and I love trying new tools or websites. As I won't have access to my own computer for the next week or so I decided to share with you some of the online games that I have created for my students on two of my favourite sites, https://www.tripticoplus.com/ and learningapps.org. Feel free to use the games or make any comments you deem necessary about them! As this is our last official assignment, I would like to thank Katherine for being a true source of motivation and you all for providing me with ideas, inspiration and lots of food for thought! :)
Triptico games
A2
https://tripticoplus.com/tshare/7jddv3ty/3595: A game on Passive Voice: Students need to find who has created, written, done one of the things on the cards and say the answer using a Passive Voice structure (for e.g. Mona Lisa was painted by Leonardo da Vinci)
C2
https://tripticoplus.com/tshare/6ft33dze/3598: This is a grammar game on Inversion and Cleft clauses. Students are split into two teams and try to get from one side of the board to the other by correctly identifying the missing words in each tile.
LEARNING APPS
A1
https://learningapps.org/display?v=pe17dmy1t18: Write the name of each country
A2

Hello
Hello,
this is this is my week 4 assignment. I created this worksheet keeping in mind a group of B2-level learners I used to teach. Their age was 26-30 (about the same as mine) and they were close friends before they started having English lessons.

Hi guys!
Hi guys!
Here is my Week 4 assignment. I got all wrapped in Kahoot! but now I think I finally understand the laptop+mobile phone set-up. So much fun! (Also, there is a small hole in the wall bar where I'm from called Cahootz and I would love to introduce this app as their way of doing Trivia Night, haha.)
Anyway, I made this game for my 13-16 year old (B1) online students. I have to give them a lot of instructions related to their computers and they often forget the terminology.
Eventually, I will improve this by adding more questions and more design but for now, I just wanted to get over the learning curve of using the program.
Thanks for this inspiring course!

I would use recordings of speakers with English as a second language.
I would use recordings of speakers with English as a second language. This reflects the reality that English is a lingua franca. However, when selecting any materials I think the accent, the clarity and the correctness of the language used need to be considered in relation to the students and their needs. This does not exclude non-native speakers.

Which ONE piece of advice would you give to a teacher who wanted to create their own classroom materials?
Which ONE piece of advice would you give to a teacher who wanted to create their own classroom materials?
I think the most important tip would be to always start with the end in mind. A teacher must always know the purpose and the objective of the lesson or the classroom material they wish to create. Is it to improve students' ability to speak fluently? Is it to improve their writing? Keeping your classroom material focused would help keep your class organized.

When using an authentic audio or video it is important to use only ‘native speakers'.
When using an authentic audio or video it is important to use only ‘native speakers'. Do you agree or disagree? Give reasons.
I would agree partially. I believe for Beginners if you start with the authentic material and it is difficult for them to process it, they may lose interest. For Beginners, non-native or clear English with some parts that are more simple is a good place to start. For example, if I have students with no background in English and if I immediately ask them to watch an English movie or a series they will get back to me with the comment that it was all Greek to them. So then I ask them to watch their home news channels in English. Once they are able to get the gist of what is being said, I can then wean them off these temporary support material. For advanced learners, I feel authentic material just adds to what they already know. They can emulate the speech and know what phrases to use while speaking. The nuanced parts of speech can be learnt by advanced learners just by watching native speakers speak.

Which Principles of Material Design are most important for you? Why?
Which Principles of Material Design are most important for you? Why?
I think that the following principle of Material Design is what I consider the most important. It doesn't matter whether you have rich, informative and educational unless it is presented well and holds the student's interest it wouldn't matter. Because student tend to generally overlook the material that provides them with more information and rather tend to focus on those that create opportunities for having fun.
Make sure the texts and tasks are as interesting, relevant and enjoyable as possible so as to exert a positive influence on the learners’ attitudes to the language and to the process of learning it.

This is part of a lesson unit on energy efficient buildings that I would use with an intermediate level ESL science class. The images I show here would be used to brainstorm and preview what energy efficient buildings are. (What is not included in the link below are the TED talks that I would show to students about other examples of energy efficient buildings. The last activity here does make a slight reference to it.)
Next week in class with my advanced group we are going to look at the theme of places.
Next week in class with my advanced group we are going to look at the theme of places. I've created two 'games' to supplement the materials I'm going to use.
The first is a 'magic presentation' which is an improvisation speaking activity. The Powerpoint shows pictures of places and when used on Powerpoint (not Google Drive) the images change automatically at 45 sec intervals.
One person has to speak about the picture until it changes. When the picture changes the person speaking changes too. You can have all eyes on one group or have mini groups do it concurrently to a smaller audience.
All the photos used were taken by my friends or me. I got them all from Facebook.
https://drive.google.com/file/d/1-Y8v7Wjp3LSRtYnVYTSPZgJLDILG99uh/view?usp=sharing
The second activity is an information gap crossword to review the vocabulary. This is one of my favourite activities but it's the first time I've created my own. I used the site Half a crossword to create it. The students will split into groups a and b. The A group will collaborate to write the clues and the Bs too. Then A and B will form pairs to complete the crossword.

The one piece of advice I would give a teacher who wanted to create their own classroom material is to think of the audience (i.e., the teachers and the students) who will be using the materials. The teacher needs to think how their material is different and will be more helpful than the multitude of material that is out there. This includes making sure the directions are clear and tasks make sense. As one teacher once said to me, there is no point to "reinvent the wheel" if the wheel is working. But if the materials will be more helpful in reaching the classroom goals, then the teacher should be creating new materials to help the students learn in the classroom.
My goal is to research more, learn more, get new ideas, become more creative and meet new interesting people.

PS: Seeing myself having met the deadline for the project I'm doing right now, would also be desirable :-)

In 12 months time, I would like to be finally publishing some of the ELT materials that I have been researching and trialing for the past few years. I think that all of the help Katherine Bilsborough has given me will be a tremendous assistance in that direction. Thank you very much, Katherine, for all of your help! I hope to also be receiving some revenues from those publications. This would allow me to travel to and enjoy some of the many exotic places that my ELT students call home. I love to travel and see the world.

This is primarily aimed at high school, university students, and adults learners in EFL contexts, particularly Asia, where a lack of fluency is prevalent (mostly due to limited exposure or opportunities to use English and education systems that focus on rote memorisation, grammar translation, and written exams).
The lesson aims to (1) explore and understand fluency, and (2) understand and improve our fluency development practices.

When using an authentic audio or video it is important to use only ‘native speakers'. Do you agree or disagree? Give reasons.
Some years ago, I would say that it was important, but now I always consider using non-native audio and video, as students need to be in contact with all the "Englishes" used and spoken around the world.
Before, I would use just British and American English, and sometimes a native speaker from Scotland or Australia.
Now, I´ve been studying the Lingua Franca concept and the more variety we have, the better.

Hi!
Hi! Before sharing my last assignment, I just wanted to say thank you to everyone. You have really impressed me with your ideas and I am so exhilarated that such wonderful teachers exist all around the world.
It has been a great pleasure to work with you all.
As for my assignment, this is a Word Association game for Young Learners. In fact, the actual words that I am using here have been chosen by one of my students who is only 7 years old. She liked the idea when I once played this game with her class so she volunteered to create a version of her own and I wanted to share it with you. You can always modify the game based on your students' level and the vocabulary that you want to teach.
Have a great summer holiday and I hope we will stay in touch :)

Lately, I have started creating worksheets based on the principles that we have discussed here and I can tell that it requires a lot of effort. Especially, what I find really challenging is the design. Now that I have the basics, I would like to continue and learn more about how to design eye-catching worksheets (just like some of you did in previous sessions). Then, after accomplishing that, in 12 months time, I would like to be able to create a variety of classroom materials and publish them so that others can use in their own classrooms.

Which one piece of advice would you give a teacher who wanted to create their own classroom material?
I am quite new to the whole process of creating ELT Materials however, what I have noticed so far is that students like materials which are challenging enough, fun, and eye-catching (structure, fonts, colours, instruction). Therefore, my advice would be that when creating ELT materials teachers should be careful and aware if what they have decided to include in the material is proficiency-level appropriate. Moreover, teachers are always free to play with fonts, colours, and other materials' elements thus creating something which is attractive and fun. As a consequence, students would most probably be engaged and motivated to learn even more.

I think that the presence of both native and non-native speakers is highly important. English learners should be exposed to a range of English varieties as this would enable them to communicate and exchange ideas with people living in various EFL settings. Also, from what I have experienced so far, students love this variety and they get excited when they listen to an accent other than the one they have listened to before.

I would like to be part of a team that is responsible for internationalizing curricula at my current workplace, a polytechnic. We are accepting more international and newcomer students as part of our 5-year plan, and this will require working with teams in each department to prepare workbooks and on-going PD opportunities. I would like to spearhead this initiative if chosen (fingers crossed!).
If this does not work out, I will continue to prepare original content for my classes, as well as work on side projects like blogging or more e-classroom support.

I am new at creating materials, and I was always used to use the Internet for any activity or material!
However, since I entered this community I have been considering this matter more seriously and I now try to think about designing my own materials, rather than googling and downloading them.
Nevertheless, this is a long process that I have to undergo still, but I believe that with hard work and dedication I will manage to develop a booklet of my own materials or at least some pages with my own worksheets.
I hope that after 12 months I will have more knowledge in how to design materials, follow more webinars and sessions upon this issue and publish at least one or two lesson plans that includes my personal work/activities/worksheets.
Last but certainly not least, I would like to thank you all for being such an incredible community of teachers from whom I have learned new and creative ideas for my classes. I would also like to thank Katherine for her undivided support and guidance throughout the sessions. It was a pleasure meeting you all!

I would like to be a better materials writer, and be able to draw on a more thorough knowledge of good quality research relating to learning. When designing materials, I want to take advantage of the knowledge about how people tend to learn best so that the skills or language I’m aiming to teach have a better chance of being understood, remembered and used successfully.
I’m also aiming to explain more about why I’m teaching something to students and why I’m using a particular method or format. Using more research to inform my materials and their design will mean I can justify better what I’m doing. Furthermore, I’ll be operating in the same way that my students should as members of an academic community, justifying what they research, how they research, and being open about it.

For listening or reading lessons have a variety of questions that include lower order thinking & higher order thinking. That is, questions that are easy to answer and questions that are a little more challenging to answer. The lower order thinking tasks (e.g. what colour was the car?, how many...?) should be questions that most students can answer by interacting with the text. The higher order thinking tasks (e.g. why do you think she did that?) are the ones that perhaps can challenge the students who quickly finished the first set of questions.

In 12 months time, I would like to be settled into a teaching routine that allows me time to produce my own materials for my classes. I'd like to be able to share and write about these on my blog. Having done this course, I hope I will create consistent and clear materials that can be reused time and time again. I will have developed an inspiration bank of possible authentic materials (as suggested by other participants) and I will be more organised in how I store my own materials.
The course has inspired me to read more about the theory behind materials writing and I'd like to continue doing that. It's also reinforced how much I enjoy exchanging ideas and learning from others.

In 12 months time, I'd like to have built up my own database of materials to use and to have ventured a little bit deeper into the network of materials writers. I see myself in a stable, quiet workplace with some established habits that make my work more methodical and structured (without suppressing any of the creativity that comes with chaos). And plants, lots of plants. :)

Hi, here is my week 4 assignment: a colleague recommended Kahoot some time ago, but I never found the time to sit down and learn how to use it...well until now! It's a B2 game for older teens (16+) where players reorder sentences containing discourse markers. As it's been the first time I've used Kahoot, please let me know if it works and if any settings need changing (e.g. time limit).

I would like to ask a question - Is there a designer who gives the final touch to all the material - decorating the pages, texts, exercises....or the author is the one who does it all, when we speak about writing a student's book for example?

Here is my week 3 assignment- sorry it's late. At the end of the last course, I worked with my exam classes to produce 'How to' video tutorials for the speaking exams. The idea being that these create a bank of student-generated materials to be used with future classes (which motivated the classes producing the videos I hope!).
For the week 3 assignment, I have created a simple worksheet to be used with the student-generated video related to the FCE speaking part 4. The aim is to review and consolidate interaction skills.

Where would you like to see yourself 12 months from now...?
Well, first of all my ambition is to learn how to design beautiful worksheets. I would probably have to take another course for that. Then I would add colour and a different shape to my simple ELT worksheets. I have enjoyed creating ELT materials a loooot, and will continue doing :) this.
I believe in continuous professional development, and I love learning... Will be learning to refine skills as materials writer.
Thank you + Katherine for such a motivating experience, and the opportunity to be a participant :)

Where would you like to see yourself 12 months from now, in terms of being a materials writer?
I want to keep learning, growing and experimenting with more ways to create materials that can make my students more aware of the social dimension of language learning. For the past few years I have been interested in what I see as the two extremes: tech tools and Lms in classrooms and at the same time simplicity in teaching. As far as the second is concerned, I started a series of posts on my blog called "Class Objects Revisited" which I plan to expand on and possibly create an e-book of several activities that focus on maximising the use of what is already available to us. As far as technology in the classroom is concerned, I'm interested in exploring more the ways tech tools can further promote student driven learning and possibly create tutorials on how they can be used in that direction.

I would like to have a complete set of materials developed for the 3 main courses I'll be teaching at my university (for the foreseeable future).
I'd like these to follow the principles that we discussed in this course, but also to have a unified style to them so that students can tell (if they're paying attention) that they have been thoughtfully put together.
Will it happen? Not if it stays this hot here (currently 37 degrees).

Hey guys,
Do you mind sharing the laptop you’re using now? I plan to buy a new laptop. I’m using ASUS but I’m not happy with it.

Since the third week was about SGM, I really conducted one for my students. Before this lesson, I encourage my students to run a Saving Turtle Campaign. After this lesson, we are really going to a Turtle Hatchery Center to hand over the fund raised!
The aim of the lesson is to make students write an article. Rather than simply giving students the points, students have to come up with their own. They will have the opportunities to study the points shared through the Gallery Walk discussion strategy before selecting the points that they believe are the most relevant. With the points, they are then able to write an article. individually.
Yeay?

Hello everyone
Hello everyone,
All good things must come to an end, and I want to thank you for sharing your wonderful ideas via discussions and materials. I do hope we meet again in another course. Feel free to add me on LinkedIn to stay in touch!
Here are my go-to games: https://drive.google.com/open?id=1-D6qxBNKPNTpS_SOupCQe1zsKKi6NLdm
They are not originally mine, but they are the ones I use the most. Very communicative and a couple incorporate technology.
Cheers,
Emel

I have a clear idea of how I want to progress.
#1 I need to do more reading on creating and developing materials
#2 I have made up my mind to engage someone to teach me how to create worksheets that are simple and effectively designed using the simplest tools.
#3. I have created a presence using Google materials for my blogsite and also a Facebook page. I want to regularly upload and write in these sites.
#4. With the experience I gain, I want to offer a similar course here in Karachi, Pakistan. It will be a face-to-face program spread over a week making it 20 hours.
I am truly inspired, so wish me luck.

hello everyone -
This is my assignment for week 3. I apologize for being late.
When I use pictures, I mostly use them as a warm-up activity for my younger students. I thought this might be a good journal assignment for a writing class for young ELL students. It was good practice citing using the Creative Commons materials. If would appreciate it if anyone could give me feedback on how I cited the pictures.

I agree with Michael in that I would advise always asking for feedback, particularly from students. It wouldn’t have to be at the end of every class or involve great detail as there’s the possibility it could be seen as tiresome and unproductive by the learners. You would also need to explain why you were asking for it. But the key point is that we need to know how well the material works from the perspective of the people who experience it and who it is ultimately designed for.
When we receive feedback we shouldn’t automatically accept what we’re told – it needs to make sense in the context of the course and class aims. And some of it will need to be followed up, asking for more explanation as to why something was thought to work or not. But if the aim is to design materials that successfully help students improve their skills, their feedback is invaluable.

I would tell them that before they create their own materials to review some similar materials, and publish their findings in a related newsletter, or magazine, so that they have to decide/find a set of criteria to evaluate them, and then to analyze what the author was trying to do, and whether they achieved it, and what could be improved. Furthermore, the reviewer would also have to decide on whether they would actually use these materials, and to what degree. This process would help the teacher to have a clearer vision of what they would and would not like to do. This publishing process would hopefully enable them to be more rigorous in their own material design too.

What I would really like to do is to create a series of online courses for training EFL teachers in pedagogy and instructional technology. That's the part about 'dreaming big'.
As for 'starting small', I would like to finish the first of these courses which will focus on 'teaching and assessing writing using web 2.0 tools'.

Hi everyone
Hi everyone,
Here's my week 3 task. I have a question for you. I have used a transcript, which I have referenced. I guess that it would be ok for classroom material, but not if I was going to publish it. What are your thoughts about using or quoting academically published materials? Thank-you for your time.
